Iceland - Day 5 & Travel Home Day
Today was our last full day in Iceland :(
Our stay included breakfast again, but not where we were staying, it was at the much fancier Geysir Hotel next door.
We even got Mimosa's for breakfast! And we paid much less staying next door!
This morning we made our way back to Reykjavik and made a few stops along the way... of course, I needed to stop for the horses.
This building caught our eye and we had to go and check it out, it was actually a guesthouse, that used to be a boarding school. We hung out here until we could check in for our flights tomorrow morning.
We got back to the city and parked by the cathedral again, since we knew the area. We actually went in and admired it.
We spent the rest of the afternoon wandering around, doing some shopping and just taking in the sights. These are just random photos from the day including interesting souvenirs we saw and sights along the way. We actually split up for a while to explore and shop on our own.
The thing about Hot Springs in Iceland is that you need to take a complete shower before and after, some people think you are watched while you do this and not at Sky, you get your own stall and it is fine. The entrance is pretty cool too.
When we first went in we took our water bottles and phones with us. The water is above my waist and I was quickly sick of carrying my water bottle, so took that back to my locker. We decided to hold onto our phones for a bit to take some photos.
After we took our photos, we actually took both our phones back to the locker and we just enjoyed the rest of our time here and the spa circuit, which was amazing, by the way.
The locker room has plenty of amenities for you to get ready to head back out. They also have a restaurant and gift shop on site. I considered getting a salt scrub, but it was about $100, so quickly passed on that!
We headed back towards downtown as it was time for supper, and it was time we had a famous Icelandic hot dog and of course we had to go to the Baejarins Beztu Hot Dog stand, it was good, but not the most amazing thing I ate on this trip. I also forgot to get any photos. The line was long and the weather was not great. We decided that we needed one more treat so we headed to Loki Cafe, which serves traditional Icelandic food. We got seated quickly and got a window table and had a great view of the cathedral.
I had Rye Bread ice cream, it was pretty good, and had actual chunks of bread in it.
Des had the pancake with Skyr & carmel sauce. And if you can tell from the photo, she didn't enjoy it at all ;)
A few evening sights as we made our way back to the car.
We spent the night back by the airport in a Marriott which was nice since the airport is about 45 minutes outside of Reykjavik. And our hotel was about 5 minutes away and had a gas station in the parking lot.
We were up early since we weren't too sure how long it would take us at the airport. We dropped the car off and the shuttle was going to be a bit, but the airport was about a 10 minute walk, so we just did that. It didn't take us too long to drop off my bag and get through security.
Here are some interesting photos from the airport.
It's an interesting airport in that you take a bus from your gate and then the drop you off close to your plane and then you walk up to your plane.
Our flight was fairly uninteresting, except for Greenland showing off for us.
Overall it was a fantastic trip, that I loved every minute of and would love to go back and finish the rest of the island!
Also, this checked off the 3rd of 3 countries I had on a journey list a few years ago! Of course that list has grown.
