Iceland - Day 2
After a fantastic sleep in our bubble it was time to get layered up and put on our waterproof clothes. We had a number of stops on our agenda today and the first was, Seljalandfoss, a 197 foot waterfall!
You can see it from the road!
There are a couple really cool things about this waterfall, but the biggest one is that there is a path and you can walk behind the waterfall.
Then you actually can walk under it.
If you continue down the path it will take you to a "hidden waterfall" You have to do a bit of scrambling to get to it
But... it is so worth it! The light comes through the centre and the mist creates the coolest bokeh in your photos.
It was such a beautiful area!
Now was time for something to eat and we found a cute cafe just off of the highway and they had tasty treats again.
Some views from the parking lot and the area
From here we made our way to the parking lot to get to the solheimasandur plane wreck. Which is a DC-3 that crashed in 1973 and the shell remains on the black sand beach.
From the parking lot you have a couple options to get to the wreck, you can walk it, it is about 4km each way to get there, but it is a flat rock path. Or you can take the shuttle from the parking lot and it will drop you off close. The shuttle costs 3400 ISK (approx $40 CA). So pick the option that works the best for you.
We did the walk, not going to lie, it is pretty boring, the scenery is not great! If you have terrible weather and you really want to see it, I would suggest the shuttle.
I mean, the crash is pretty cool in the middle of a black sand beach.
Another thing to keep in mind for Iceland is that there are not costs to go and see many of the sights, BUT they do charge for parking in each of the sites, and you need to pay at each of them. I really wish they had a all day parking pass you could buy. And don't skip paying, they have cameras recording you coming in and going out, you have 24 hours to pay for your parking.
Our next stop was stunning... Reynisfjara beach. This is the most famous black sand beach in Iceland.
We spent quite a bit of time here just wandering around and taking in the views.
These are basalt columns.
Unfortunately in early 2026 a strong winter storm came through the area and changed the landscape forever so some of the above does not look the same anymore.
Also when visiting keep an eye on the ocean, this area is known for sneaker waves that will come up quickly and have been know to pull people out to sea.
We finished our day in Vik. First we had to find the red roof church and take in all of the views!
In Vik, they have a place called Black Crust Pizzeria, the crust is made with activated charcoal. So of course we had to check it out! There is a long line, but one of my favourite things was that after you order they seat you, if there isn't a seat for you they won't take your order. I don't remember which kind we got.
It was ok, not my favourite, and at $40 was pretty pricey!
We had seen a cute place to get dessert, so that was our last stop for the night! Crepes.
It was Nutella with a prince pollo chocolate bar in it.
Now that was good!
We made our way to our guest house and settled in for a good nights sleep, pretty sure another busy day is coming up.
