Iceland - Day 3
The thing about Iceland is that you spend so much time walking that by the end of the night you are exhausted so you sleep so well!
Our fist stop today was for a caffeine (well tea for me) break and a little pastry at the coolest coffee shop around... Skool beans. It was just ok for me, but the concept was really fun!
Our next destination was the furthest east we would be visiting on the island, so we did have a long driving day today. But these long drives aren't so bad when you have fantastic scenery to look at.
This destination was the number one thing I wanted to do on this trip and that was a visit to the Jokulsarlon Glasier Lagoon. It is so cool (literally)! I kind of wish we had taken a zodiak out into the lagoon, but it was very wet this day and the views were still amazing from shore.
If you walk along the beach and under the highway it will take you to the ocean and the black sand beach that the pieces of ice from the glacier come ashore and look like diamonds in the sand, otherwise known as Diamond Beach.
Seriously this location was a photographer's dream spot... ok... actually all of Iceland is.
After we left the lagoon we headed out to do a hike (I don't remember the name), it did have quite a bit of elevation gain and with the clouds, I stopped about a km in, Des did try to go ahead but the cloud cover never did clear, so we didn't get the views we were hoping for on this one.
From here we made our way to the Skaftafell Nature reserve, which is a 3km round trip hike... the views were so pretty here. Along the path the first waterfall you come to is Hundafoss. Each waterfall is so pretty and unique.
The views along the path were so pretty
And then you get to Svartifoss! What makes this one so cool is the Basalt columns around it. We were here just before sunset and we had the place to ourselves.
Can you pronounce this?
The sun had started to set and it was time to go find our guesthouse for the night (we stayed somewhere different each day).
