Costa Rica - Day 1

I booked this trip to Costa Rica sort of last minute, well last minute for me.  I was going through a rough time at work so I needed to get away.  There is a direct flight from Calgary and I was able to find pretty good accommodation for a good price, so the decision was made.

Like most international flights out of Calgary this one was a red eye and we left at 11:45pm.  It was probably one of the worst red eye flights I have ever had.  Someone on the flight had brought their cats along and they cried the entire flight, I was very unimpressed.  The views were pretty when we were landing into Liberia.

Couple quick tips, when you go through customs you need the address of where you will be staying.  If you are renting a car and want to use your credit card insurance you need to bring a letter from them confirming your insurance (a quick call to mine and they sent the letter).  This only covers one type of insurance, the other is mandatory that you get from the rental car company.  Someone at the rental place didn't have it, and they were losing it the the agent.

I was spending my first few nights in Fortuna and it is a 2.5 hour drive.  So I started making my way there.  Our flight had landed just after 7 and I couldn't check in until 3, so I had time to kill.  I made a couple stops along the way to take in the views.

Then I went and explored Fortuna a bit.  The views from the town square towards Arenal Volcano were so pretty.

I went and found a place to get some lunch and I went to The Open Kitchen and had the most delicious green goddess bowl.

I would actually go back just to eat this again!

I was fading very quickly since I had been up for more then 24 hours and didn't get much rest on the plane.  So I headed towards my airbnb, which was at a place called Relax Termalitas Hot Springs.  I had rented a converted shipping container at a spot with a hot springs that I would have full use of.  The hot springs was going to be useful as I had a few activities planned that would be great to relax in.  I couldn't fully check in, but they let me go wait by one of the pools.  It was going to be great.

I just grabbed some nachos from the restaurant there and called it an early night since I was exhausted!
